Every family has that moment on Christmas Eve: the food is eaten, the presents are waiting, and someone asks, “What do we do now?” This year, try something different. A printable Christmas escape room turns your living room into a puzzle adventure where kids and grown-ups work together to save the day. No screens, no locks to buy, just paper, scissors, pencils and a lot of laughing.
What is a printable Christmas escape room?
A printable escape room is a puzzle game you download as a PDF, print at home and set up around the house. Players follow a story, crack a series of puzzles and combine the answers into one final code. It has all the excitement of a real escape room, but you play it at your own kitchen table, in pyjamas if you like.
It is also one of the easiest family Christmas games to organise. You print, cut out a few pieces, hide the envelopes, and the game does the rest.
Why it works so well as a family Christmas game
Everyone plays together
Board games often end with a winner and a few grumpy losers. In an escape room the whole team wins or loses together. Younger kids spot hidden symbols, teens crack logic puzzles and grown-ups help with the tricky bits.
It gets kids moving and thinking
Instead of everyone staring at a phone, the puzzles send players hunting around the room. It is active, chatty and great for that restless energy before bedtime.
It’s a new tradition
Once you’ve played one, it’s easy to make it a yearly ritual. A Christmas escape room can become something your kids look forward to, right after the presents.
Meet our game: The Stolen Christmas Signal

New in version 2: hands-on puzzles you build yourself
We’ve given the game a crafty upgrade. Instead of just filling in worksheets, players now cut, fold and slide seven hands-on pieces, spread across 6 envelopes and the grand finale:
- Decoder wheel: two discs joined with a split pin, so the wheel really turns.
- Candy weights: 12 candies of 1 kg each to balance on the present scales.
- Elf cards: 4 cards to place on the numbered squares of the wrapping board.
- Advent calendar doors: little doors that fold open to reveal what’s behind them.
- Bauble tiles: 16 tiles to place on the grid.
- Morse bell card: fold it into 3 panels and glue the tab to make a triangular bell tower.
- The Sleigh Lock (finale): glue the separate front and back together along 7 glue strips with a glue stick. That gives you 6 open sleeves; slide the strips through until the windows show the code.
An adult should cut out the advent calendar doors and the Sleigh Lock windows, using sharp scissors or a craft knife. Kids can cut out everything else. Allow about 1 hour of prep, less if the players do their own cutting. Got crafting questions? Check our FAQ.
How to set up your Christmas escape room in 4 steps
- Download the ZIP file after payment and unzip it.
- Print the pages on A4 or Letter paper. Colour is recommended. Print at 100% (actual size), not “fit to page”, or the parts won’t fit together.
- Cut and hide: cut out the pieces (an adult does the doors and lock windows), then hide the envelopes around the house using the host guide. All in, prep takes about 1 hour.
- Play: gather your elves and crack the final code together!
What you need

- Scissors (plus a craft knife if you like, adults only)
- Glue stick and sticky tape
- 1 split pin (or a pushpin and an eraser)
- Pens or pencils
- 6 envelopes
- Optional: internet for the code check
Tips for a magical game night
Set the scene
Dim the big lights, switch on the Christmas tree and put on a festive playlist. A few candles (safely out of reach) or fairy lights make the room feel like part of the story.
Give everyone a role
Let one child be the “code keeper” who writes down answers, another the “envelope finder”. Small roles keep everybody involved, especially in bigger families.
Use the hint cards without guilt
The goal is fun, not frustration. If the team is stuck for a few minutes, hand over a hint card. The host guide helps you decide when.
Celebrate the win
When the final code is cracked, hand out the certificate and maybe a little treat. Snap a photo of your Elf Rescue Squad; it makes a lovely Christmas memory.
Free printable or paid: what’s the difference?
If you search for a free printable Christmas escape room, you’ll find plenty of single puzzles and quick activities. They’re great for a five-minute break. A complete game gives you a story, puzzles that build towards one final code, a host guide, hints and an answer key, so you can relax and enjoy the evening instead of designing puzzles yourself.
