A Printable Treasure Hunt for Kids with Invisible Ink and Decoder Glasses

Schatkaart, decodeerschijf en een UV-lampje dat onzichtbare inkt laat zien op een zonnige tafel – speurtocht voor kinderen Kapitein Kompas

Kids love a secret. Give them one written in invisible ink and they will run around the house for an hour to crack it. Captain Compass and the Invisible Ink is a printable treasure hunt for kids aged 5–10, with real things to make and use: decoder glasses, a spinning decoder wheel and a treasure map that comes together piece by piece.

The story: Captain Compass hid his treasure

Captain Compass has hidden his treasure and written all the clues in invisible ink. Only sailors with the secret red glasses can read them. The children follow the trail from envelope to envelope, solve each task and finally open the treasure chest with the secret chest code. What is inside the chest is up to you: sweets, small presents or party bags.

What makes this treasure hunt different

Many printable hunts are a list of clues on a page. Captain Compass is built around things children do with their own hands:

  • Decoder glasses. The kids cut out a pair of paper glasses, stick red sweet wrapper, red film or a piece of red folder behind the eyes, and suddenly hidden pictures and messages appear on the clue cards.
  • A decoder wheel. Two paper discs and a split pin make a wheel they turn to translate symbols into the answer.
  • Treasure map pieces. With every solved task they collect a piece of the map. Put them together and the map shows where to look next.
  • Binoculars, a compass grid and flags. The envelopes are marked with flags in colour and shape, so even non-readers know which one to open.

No red at home? Use a red folder, a sweet wrapper or the black and white window template in the file. The message is the same.

Two levels: ages 5–7 and 8–10

A five-year-old and a ten-year-old need very different puzzles, so there are two levels in one download. Level ★ (ages 5–7) uses pictures. Level ★★ (ages 8–10) uses letters for children who can read. On the task pages you cut out the part you need. Mixed group, like brothers and sisters or a class party? Do both and let the older kids help the younger ones.

A scavenger hunt for kids, printable and ready today

If you were looking for a scavenger hunt for kids printable, this works the same way: you hide envelopes around the house or garden and the children hunt for them. The difference is that every envelope holds a small puzzle, so it feels like a real adventure instead of just searching. It works for 2–12 children and takes about 30–45 minutes to play. The adult needs around 20 minutes to print, cut and hide everything.

Perfect for parties and rainy days

  • Birthday parties: a pirate or sailor party practically plans itself, and the treasure chest doubles as the moment for party bags.
  • Rainy afternoons and school holidays: it all happens indoors on paper, with no screens.
  • In the classroom: teachers may copy the game for their own class.

At the end every child gets a certificate and a sailor badge, which also make nice take-home souvenirs.

What you need

  • A printer: single-sided at 100% or "actual size", in colour for the invisible ink. A4 and US Letter are both included.
  • Regular printer paper; 160 g/m² card makes the decoder wheel sturdier.
  • Scissors and glue or tape, a split pin or drawing pin for the wheel.
  • Red sweet wrapper, red film or a red see-through folder (or the window template).
  • 6 envelopes and a treasure or treat.

Short on time? There is a basic version you can play without cutting.

How to set it up in about 20 minutes

  1. Print the pages for the level you need.
  2. Make one pair of decoder glasses as a demo, or let the kids make their own as the first activity.
  3. Put the clues and map pieces in the flag envelopes and hide them in order.
  4. Hide the treasure and keep the chest code page handy.
  5. Read the captain's letter aloud and let the hunt begin. Hints and solutions are included if a group gets stuck.
